The author of the article examines changes in the approach of English-language scholars to the history of private presses operating in England in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. An analysis of selected publications has made it possible to establish the directions in which writings concerning the matter evolved, both form- and content-wise. The author distinguishes the types of publications dominant in the various periods, beginning with 19th century publishing catalogues and bibliographies, and ending with monographs published in recent years. The works mentioned in the article are also used to describe the research field, changing over the years. In particular, the author points to issues like analysis of the printed matter or creation of bibliography. In addition, she emphasises the significance of editing as well as additional material increasing the scholarly value of publications.
