The article analyses changes in the approach to the conservation of old furniture. A classification of historical examples of intervention has produced a base for presenting the evolution of the crafts tradition in this field. Traditional methods, subjugated to aesthetic and utilitarian arguments, as a rule contradict the postulate of protecting the historical substance and thus contribute to depriving the furniture of its documentary worth. The new conception of protecting historical furniture, with the coparticipation of the exact sciences, refers to the general premises of the protection of cultural goods. The effectiveness of this branch of protection depends on d is covering an organizational framework for new forms of conservation as well as on taking into account in training the various structural and contentual changes in this domain.
