According to J. Lacan’s theory, a subject never knows what he says. We cannot fully express ourselves in language, it is the language that speaks, not us – the language speaks us. In that respect Salvador Dali, while creating his narrative, can never be identified with his personal “I”, with himself. An individual can express his creative life and personal experience only through art, which is a unique sphere where a genius personality can be emancipated. The author of the article does not provide an unambiguous definition of the identity of the creative subject of My secret life. Basing her interpretation on psychoanalysis, hermeneutics and deconstruction the author shows the situations in which the subject’s identity can be constituted – for example when the subject encounters “the object of desire”.
