The Eastern Borderlands were small homeland for people of different nationalities, cultures and religions. For centuries the Polish and the Russian state (later Soviet state) have competed with each other for the area. Poland lost the competition in 1945. Soviet authorities decided to eliminate all traces of Polish culture in these lands. They carried out an expatriation of Polish people. Over the next few years former residents of the Eastern Borderlands could not talk about their complicated history. At the end of the 80s of the 20th century political changes in Poland brought improvements. As a result, in 1988 the Society of Friends of Lviv and the South-Eastern Borderlands was founded in Wrocław. Its main purpose was to disseminate the truth about the history of the inhabitants of the area. In October 1988 in Szczecin Club of the Society was created. In January 1989 it turned into a Department of the Society. Joseph Kasprzycki became its fi rst chairman. The Department conducts active work of various kinds in Poland and Ukraine-primarily educational, cultural, charitable, publishing. It has been recognized in Poland for many times. Unfortunately, the Department’s still unrealized task is to establish cooperation with the local Ukrainian community.
