The article examines the changes in the frequency of Czech simultaneous converbs (přechodník přítomný) compared to their Croatian and Slovenian counterparts (glagolski prilog sadašnji, deležje na -č, -aje, -e) from the 19th century to the present day, and seeks to explain the differences in the evolution of these verb forms. While the frequency of Croatian converbs has remained consistently high, and that of Slovenian consistently low, Czech converbs have seen a sharp decline over the same period. The article suggests that this divergence may be associated with the shape of linguistic norms — which may either follow long-standing linguistic trends (as in Croatian), or stand in opposition to them (as in Czech and Slovenian) — as well as to other factors related to language policy. Additionally, the article addresses certain methodological challenges concerning corpus-based contrastive analysis.
