A pioneering contribution, based on a specific example of the financial status of a Polish nobleman, a former officer in the army of Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Maciej Karp in the last quarter of the eighteenth century. The author describes the officer’s struggles with everyday problems and efforts to ensure a decent living despite the loss of the land. Moving to the city for the former landowner constituted a challenge. Based on archival sources, the text addresses the issues of conducting business transactions (they often ended with fiasco), lawsuits, periodic loss of liquidity and housing standards, which gives a picture of level defining the old concept of wealth, comfort, mediocrity or poverty in the Borderlands in contemporary Poland. The issue is so important that the described embodiment allows the readers to imagine the problems faced by a large group of nobles at that time who were forced to seek new sources of income. The quoted description of the municipal seat of Maciej Karp provides the opportunity to assess the living conditions and the level of wealth of the former Lithuanian army officer in times before Napoleonic Era. At the same time it is an example of the inevitable fusing of a nobleman and his offspring in the bourgeois state in the Polish Republic in the third quarter of the eighteenth century.

Новаторский вклад, описывающий конкретный пример финансового состояния польского дворянина, бывшего офицера Великого княжества Литовского Матея Карпа в последней четверти XVIII-го в. Автор описывает офицера, борющегося с повседневными проблемами и усилиями по обеспечению достойной жизни в ситуации потери земных благ. Переезд в город для бывшего помещика было огромным испытанием. В тексте, на основании архивных источников, рассматриваются вопросы ведения деловых операций (нечасто заканчивались фиаско), судебных дел, периодической финансовой неустойчивостью и жилищных стандартов, дающих представление о старой концепции определения уровня богатства, комфорта, посредственности или бедности на Кресах тогдашней Польши. Вопрос настолько важен, что описанный вариант позволяет на воображение проблем, с которыми столкнулась большая группа шляхты того времени, которая была вынуждена искать новые средства к существованию. Приведенное описание городской резиденции офицера Мацей Карпа дает возможность оценить условия жизни и уровень богатства бывшего офицера литовской армии перед наполеоновским периодом. В то же время, оно является примером неизбежного слияния дворянина и его потомства в состояние буржуазии Польши в третьей четверти восемнадцатого столетия.
