This study deals with a particular, but relevant case study of an orthodox milieu de mémoire: Saint Nicholas monastery. My analysis is based on an oral inquiry conducted in the framework of my Ph.D. studies with the nuns of the monastery between 1999 and 2004. I have noticed here a complex reality in which the Orthodox faith and rituals mingled with the desire of independence with regards to the political (communist) order, which lead to more or less conflicted relationships with the authorities. The individual and collective memory of nuns corroborated with the archive documents offered me the necessary information not only to trace the past of the religious community, but also to size the tensions into the communist society reflected, at a smaller scale, in the monastery. According to my research findings, I can conclude that the everyday life of the nuns of Saint Nicholas monastery is fashioned by their love for God, for the others, by their respect of human dignity, by their sacrifice for truth and justice, by their quest of freedom and of preserving the orthodox values.

Badanie to dotyczy indywidualnego, ale istotnego studium przypadku – prawosławnego klasztoru Saint Nicholas. Moja analiza jest oparta na ustnych wywiadach, przeprowadzonych w ramach przewodu doktorskiego z zakonnicami klasztoru w latach 1999–2004. Zauważyłam tutaj złożoną rzeczywistość, w której prawosławna wiara i obrządek mieszały się z pragnieniem niezależności w odniesieniu do politycznego (komunistycznego) reżimu, co prowadziło do mniej lub bardziej konfliktowych relacji z władzami. Indywidualna i zbiorowa pamięć zakonnic, w powiązaniu z dokumentami archiwalnymi zawierającymi niezbędne informacje, pozwoliła nie tylko prześledzić przeszłość społeczności religijnej, lecz także oszacować wielkość napięć w społeczeństwie komunistycznym, które odzwierciedlały się, w mniejszej skali, w klasztorze. Według moich ustaleń badawczych mogę stwierdzić, że codzienne życie zakonnic klasztoru jest kształtowane przez miłość do Boga i innych, poszanowanie godności ludzkiej oraz przez ofiary ponoszone w imię prawdy i sprawiedliwości podczas dążenia do wolności i zachowania wartości prawosławnych.
