The article aims at presenting the views of Andrei Kuraev on ecumenism. The presentation is based on his Вызов экуменизма (the challenge of ecumenism), which is his key book in discussing this topic. The discussion is taken up in the following three sections: 1/ Andrei Kuraev: a short biographical note; 2/ The “good” and the “bad” ecumenism according to Andrei Kuraev; 3/ Anti-ecumenical views of Kuraev backgrounded by the ecclesiological and national awareness of the Russian Orthodoxy. The presentation offers the following conclusions. Andrei Kuraev is one of the most influential theologians, religious publicists and apologists in today’s Russian Orthodoxy. For the sake of defending purity of the Orthodox doctrine, he basically rejects either ecumenism in general or the “bad” ecumenism, in which he sees a threat for the identity of the Orthodox Church. From the Roman Catholic perspective, the image of the ecumenical movement as drawn by Kuraev seems mostly distorted, incomplete and, thus, not true. All this points to historical, confessional and national determinants of Andrei Kuraev’s views on ecumenism.
