The author of this article analyzes the cultural elements relevant for the understanding of the films meaning and the way of their translation at the polish subtitles. The remarks are based on the film Sophie Scholl – The Final Days (German: Sophie Scholl – Die letzten Tage, 2005) by director Marc Rothemund and writer Fred Breinersdorfer. It is about the last days in the life of Sophie Scholl, a 21‑year‑old member of the anti‑Nazi non‑violent student resistance group the White Rose, part of the German Resistance movement. The author comes to the conclusion that the need to foreignise results from the necessity to confront the final recipients with the (historical) cultural difference.
