“Defence diplomacy” is a relatively new term developed in response to the post-Cold War demand for new international missions and functions carried out by the armed forces. It should not be understood as a kind of traditional “military diplomacy plus.” In the absence of a broadly accepted definition of “defence diplomacy,” countries try to adapt it to the needs of their own security policy. In Poland, the term appears only in journalism; there is no precise reference to any foreign and security policy documents. The main goal of defense diplomacy is to co-design and implement state security policy and to establish stable international relations in the field of defense. Conceptualising defence diplomacy is the starting point for understanding its role as one of the most important instruments of foreign and security policy in modern countries.
