In 1934 Thérèse Rivière and Germaine Tillion set off to Aurès (Algeria) to conduct ethnographic research of the Chaouia. This expedition was prepared by the French anthropologists centered around Marcel Mauss. Its cognitive aims were related to the interests of the French colonial authorities. When in 1954 the Algerian-French war broke out, Tillion got involved in organization of social welfare for poor Algerians, which was supposed to remove the reason for the armed conflict. Tillion’s scientific work reveals slight interest in Islam as the primary cultural context of the analyzed phenomena. This is also characteristic of the intellectual environment from which Tillion comes from and is the result of the construction of the conceptual apparatus of cultural anthropology.
