Artykuł koncentruje się na wzrastającym w ostatnim czasie zainteresowaniu „uczeniem się” i „wiedzą” jako drogą do zespołowego i regionalnego sukcesu gospodarczego. Jest to jeden z aspektów rosnącego i generalnie produktywnego zaangażowania geografów ekonomicznych i analityków regionalnych. Strategia ukierunkowana na uczenie się i wprowadzanie polityki regionalnej, w której władze regionalne, firmy i pośrednicy definiują problemy rozwojowe w sposób interaktywny, przypisując im zakresy odpowiedzialności i monitorując wyniki obserwacji w sposób ułatwiający zarówno uczenie się, jak i adaptację, staje się wyzwaniem dla regionu konkurencyjnego. Artykuł rozpoczyna się od przeglądu teorii innowacji i polityki regionalnej, przechodząc następnie do aspektów związanych z wspieraniem procesów innowacyjnych przez Unię Europejską , a kończy refleksją dotyczącą wniosków dla polskich regionów w kontekście procesów innowacyjnych w UE.
