The aim of this article is to evaluate the importance of organic farming in the region of south-eastern Poland with fragmented area structure, and at the same time recognizing the benefits of ecological agricultural production and problems and barriers to its further development. The empirical material of the paper is the data from economic and general statistics and results of own studies. The analysis of empirical material showed that the examined region is characterized by potentially favorable conditions for the development of organic farming and that farmers receive a number of different benefits. This region, however, is characterized by an average level of development of organic farming, and in addition, in recent years there has been a decline in the number of organic farms, which may be the consequence of barriers in this area, especially in the form of generally small agricultural land resources available to individual agricultural households. It should therefore be assumed that, as a result of the relatively greater financial support for the development of organic farming in smaller area farms, there will be an increased interest of farmers in this form of farming in the region.
