The name of Professor Ivo Hlobil is well-known among Polish art historians, who appreciate him as an outstanding expert on the culture and art legacy of mediaeval and modern (Renaissance) Bohemia and Moravia, and an author of numerous publications about the history of architecture, sculpture, painting and crafts as well as the iconography of the discussed epochs. In addition, Hlobil studies the history and theory of the protection and conservation of historical works of art. For almost forty years of his scientific career, he has followed paths marked out by European and Czech coryphaei (Alois Riegl, Max Dvořák, Hans Tietze, Vojtĕch Birnbaum, Vincenc Kramář, Václav Wagner, Václav Richter et al.). The accomplishments of Ivo Hlobil in the history and theory of the protection and conservation of historical monuments involve books, articles, contributions and interviews. Published in Prague in 2008, the titular selection of the professor’s works encompasses 37 carefully chosen texts. The book presents a cross- -section of reflections, an evolution of beliefs, a wide range of interests and the applied methodology. Its distinguishing features include a superior discourse, individual style, personal involvement and a subtle sense of humour.
