The article discusses equipment, introduced several years ago and now mass produced, for testing the sensitivity of the paint layers of paintings. A simple, safe and quick test enables to characterize the individual sensitivity of the painting to simultaneous heat and pressure. It can also examine the influence of moisture, solvents and various conservation compounds on the paint layer. Such data make it possible to precisely determine the limits of safety for the painting subjected to relining, straightening and consolidation which is particularly important for nineteenth- and twentieth-century compositions. The tests also make it feasible to establish the optium conditions for operations which determine their maximum effectiveness. At the same time, they enable conservators to eliminate the danger of excessive uncontrolled endowment of the paint layer with a more plastic nature.
