In this article functions of public spaces of contemporary Szczecin were discussed. The primary aim of the research was to draw attention to the fact that public meeting places such as Jasne Błonia are common value for the city inhabitants. It was assumed that public space is not simply an issue of recreation or leisure, but the instrument of making sense of urban community. As is clear from the study, Jasne Błonia is the space that allows to create individuals’ identity. As social identity is the subject of choice, increasingly people consciously and carefully build their social images. Practices carried out by residents in the area of Jasne Błonia indicate that it is a manifestation of the social space of identity.
