Attempts have been made to see whether it is possible to replace or to supplement lightings (ultra-violet, infra-red radiation or visible light, either diffused or cast at various angles) by a wire television and its use as a form of recording those investigations. To this aim, experimental studies have been carried out. Altogether 16 paintings (12 of contemporary and 4 of old painters) were used as the trial material. Polish and Japanese television equipment was employed in the studies, with 2 x 6 tests made on each picture. The studies confirmed the usefulness of wire television in an expert appraisement of paintings. Its use makes possible a comprehensive — within the scope described above — macroscopic appraisal of a painting’s surface. The advantage of this technique is its simplicity, short time of testings and the possibility to reproduce their course for a number of times, together with a commentary continously and dynamically recorded on a videotape. Without posing any danger to examined works of art, the technique makes it possible to reveal and position damages as well as conservation and forgery operations.
