Abstracts
The Polish word nauka ‘science’ has two pronunciations: [na-u-ka] and [nau-ka]. There are different opinions on the origin of the latter. Recently, Henryk Duda published a long article on this question. The author of the present paper draws attention to the fact that a similar development occurred in Polish dialects in words like chałupa ‘cottage’ > chaupa and dziewucha ‘girl’ > dzieucha, dzioucha and claims that nauka, chaupa, dzieucha, dzioucha are to be accounted for by what he calls irregular sound change due to frequency.
