Over the period of the past 25 years rural co-operatives in Poland have been undergoing a serious crisis. However, there has been a strong need to rebuild such form of an economic activity. For many years different forms of rural co-operatives have been activating local environments. At present co-operative triggers are needed for the development of co-operatives in Poland, both internal and external ones, including a clearly determined attitude of the Polish authorities to the essence and position of the co-operatives in the national economy while as regards the co-operatives themselves – the improvement of their management efficiency. A public agricultural service should play an important role in that process by organizing training for the purpose of presenting ideas for and mechanisms behind the functioning of the co-operatives, and encouraging farmers being members of the co-operatives to actively take part in their life.
