The phenomenon of drunk drivers is a continuously present issue that requires immediate and integrated countermeasures, both at the local as well as national and international levels. The problems intensifies, causing not only economical but also social and health damages. The aim of the undertaken studies was to gather opinions of candidates for drivers as well as to determine their knowledge about and emotional approach to drunk drivers. Another important purpose was to elaborate implications for drivers’ trainings in terms of alcohol-related problems. In general, the study examined 415 candidates for drivers from three voivodeships: Małopolskie, Świętokrzyskie and Lubelskie. The method applied in the study was the diagnostic survey, and the technique used was polling (with the questionnaire prepared by the authors). The knowledge of candidates about the risks of using alcohol is poor, both when it comes to legal sanctions and the danger of losing control over a vehicle. As much as the respondents declared that there is no excuse for drunk driving, they are inclined to undertake such behaviours in certain circumstances. The problem of drunk driving is perceived by the respondents as a social phenomenon, arising from its wide acceptance, particularly in rural areas. A significant number of the respondents declared that organising special trainings, both for candidates and drivers, is necessary and they indicated the contents that should be included in such. According to the survey participants, the trainings should be strictly practical, should influence not only drivers’ knowledge but also attitudes, be obligatory for candidates and voluntary (as an extension of training offers) for active and professional drivers.
