This paper attempts to analyse the opinions of the Polish Public Employment Services staff about the unemployed profiling. The research is based on the qualitative data collected during the seminars disseminating the results of the project titled Analysis of the factors increasing the risk of long-term unemployment – developing methodology of the unemployed profiling on the local labour market to be applied by the Public Employment Services. As the obtained results show, caseworkers perceive profiling as an useful tool which can support better targeting of active labour market measures, the improvement of the PES performance and better allocation of public spending to labour market policy. At the same time they point out that profiling may cause pigeonholing effect and stigmatisation of the unemployed.
