In 1978 Kielce’s branch office of the Ateliers for the Conservation of Cultural Property — Workshops of the Conservation of the Works of Art were instructed to carry out a comprehensive research study on the conservation and renovation of an intedor decor of the former Cracow Bishops' Palace in Kielce. The team engaged with the studies and preparing a programme for conservation as well as executional work involved specialists from the Workshop for the Conservation of Work of Art and included, first and foremost, such experts as Małgorzata Zyzik, Alina Celichowska, Adam Młyński, Olgierd Chojnacki and the authors of the present article, i.e. Ilia lliew and Lucjana Młyńska. The Palace was built in 1641—1645. This is a rectangular structure with projections and corner towers. It was erected in a manneristic style. The decor of the Palace comprises embellishments made in various materials and techniques, which posed a difficult and complicated task for the executors of the project. On the basis of the results of the studies decisions were taken and a programme for conservation work was drawn. The work completed by the end of 1986 included: — reconstruction of sgraffito decorations, — reconstruction of stuccos and galleries and restoration of nearly original colouring, — making-up of stone cornices and framings as well as restoration of colouring, — at the moment conservation work is extended to portals and eastern loggias made in Chęciny marble and in galena, — preservation of marble amorial cartoushes situated over a marble loggia on the eastern elevation of the Palace as well as partial restoration of colouring, — uncovering of small details of painted decorations (such as coats of arms, sun-dial disks) ; they were all removed from the wall and transferred to the investor after conservation. — removal of repaintings from decorations in the eastern loggia, chapel and southern recess as well as restoring to them their almost original appearance, — with regard to polychromy on walls and roofing inside the Palace (except for small emergency interventions) it may be said that only maintenance conservation was applied and the problem of aesthetic interpretation was left open. It seems that conservation work on elements of the decor of Bishops’ Palace in Kielce, although far from being completed, seems to meet the assumptions adopted at the beginning. The appearance of the frontal elevation of the Palace has got changed radically. Its proper compositional and colouring harmony of individual elements of decoration and architecture as well as a style uniformity have got restored.
