The article contains the presentation of Pontius Pilate according to Jewish and Roman sources. Philo of Alexandria first mentions Pilate in his work Legatio ad Caium. Philo quotes the letter of Agrippa I, which contains critical description on Pilate’s proceeding against the Jews in Judea. Much more descriptions can be found in Flavius Josephus’s works. Flavius writes about several argues between the Roman prefect and local residents. The article describes also studies on „The Pilate’s Stone” from Cesarea Maritima, which certifies the title of Judean governors between 6-41 A.D. as “prefect”; and the specification of first Christians wrote by Tacitus, which also recalls Pilate as arbiter in Jesus of Nazareth’s case.
