The article discusses the problem of Upper Silesian memory – family memory and home memory, and the problems of oblivion and forgetting the past in the two contexts mentioned above the social spaces – family and home. These problems are considered with reference to a rich, mainly sociological, theoretical reflection. The paper is based on research on Upper Silesian identity, especially on interviews with the laureate of the dialect competition and with famous Upper Silesians, who often live in other Polish regions today. Social memory in regions such as Upper Silesia is complex, full of blanks and often painful. This concerns not only the collective memory, but also the space of the family, memory in which the older generations intentionally forget painful and difficult facts from the past, for example, memories about the forced military service in the Wehrmacht during World War II. Memory about home and its cultural peculiarity is often sentimental. Home and the home’s image in the culture appear to be a space of happiness because of memories, observed customs, articles of everyday use and souvenirs. Home – a house – is a concrete place in the geographical space even when none of the family members live there or the house does not exist anymore. It is still the place to which people are constantly returning and are discovering things combined with family memory in this space.
