Rozpatrywana z punktu widzenia prawno-etycznego zasada godności człowieka jest uniwersalnym fundamentem ludzkiego bytu. Godność ta przysługuje każdemu człowiekowi w sposób istotny, równy, nierozłączny, a także niezależnie od innych szczególnych przymiotów. Godność jest konsekwencją sposobu istnienia osoby ludzkiej. Reprezentując chrześcijański sposób patrzenia na człowieka, Jan Paweł II mówi o trzech aspektach wskazujących na źródła pochodzenia godności człowieka: o jego pochodzeniu, wyzwoleniu jakim obdarował go Bóg przez Jezusa Chrystusa, o pochodzącym od Boga zaproszeniu do udziału w Bożym życiu. Dla Papieża istota ludzka w swym najkrótszym określeniu jest widzialnym obrazem niewidzialnego Boga. Jan Paweł II rozpatruje również godność człowieka w skali życia społecznego. Twierdzi, że jedynie moralność, która uznaje normy obowiązujące zawsze i wszystkich stanowi etyczny fundament współżycia społecznego opartego na sprawiedliwości i należytym szacunku wobec każdej istoty ludzkiej. Osoba ludzka jest podmiotem i celem.

Considered from the legal and ethnical point of view, the rule of human dignity is a universal monument of human being. Human dignity belongs to everybody in a substantial, equal and inseparable way, and also independently from different special attributes. Human dignity is a consequence of the way of a human being existing. By presenting the Christian way of perceiving a human being, John Paul II mentions three aspects pointing at the sources of human dignity: the human origin, the liberation given by God through Jesus Christ and given by God invitation to take part inHis life. For the Pope, the human being - in its shortest description – is a visual representation of invisible God. John Paul II considers also human dignity in the scope of social life. He claims that only morality, which is based on the rules obligatory for everyone and in all times, forms the ethnical foundation of social life, based on justice and due respect towards every human being.
