The process of social integration in the Recovered Territories was, from the historical point of view, a superior problem of the Polish authorities after the Second World War. The program was based on a developed institutional system, referring largely to the so-called Society for the Development of Western and Northern Territories (Polish: Towarzystwo Rozwoju Ziem Zachodnich i Północnych, hereinafter as TRZZ). Its immediate predecessor, and also a source of inspiration for the emergence of the other one, was the Polish Western Union, functioning since the interwar period (Polish: Polski Związek Zachodni, hereinafter as PZZ). First, the authoress presented the activity of the TRZZ at the central level, which was managed by the Chief Council elected at the General Assembly of the TRZZ. The Council established the guidelines of activity, approved work plans and selected a central executive body of the Union, i.e. the Presidium of the Chief Council. The Central Audit Commission and the Main Arbitration Court were the remaining bodies of the union. At the statutory level, the Union’s activities were to concern both the domestic and foreign activity, focused on the Polonia living in Western Europe and in the Americas. The Grudziądz department of the TRZZ, as a district unit, was created on the initiative of the Regional Board of TRZZ in Bydgoszcz, the Board of the Branch of the District of the Polish Teachers’ Union in Grudziądz, and School Inspectors of the Presidium of the City and the District National Council in Grudziądz. In less than a decade of its activity, the Society based in Grudziądz had several hundred members, and exerted a real influence on the shaping of the worldview of several thousand citizens. A series of political and cultural events were organized, integrating the local community for the purpose of conscious and deliberate indoctrination, submission to the propaganda of the myth of the Western Territories as “prosperous, beautiful and cultural”.
