The intention of this article is to present problems connected with the conservation of the art o f the Far East. The author was encouraged to broach this issue by the fact that although Polish collections contain numerous examples o f such art, we do not have at our disposal sufficient experience as regard suitable protection and conservation. First conservation undertakings, using traditional Far Eastern methods, were conducted in 1984 in the Chair of the Conservation of Paper and Leather at the Mikołaj Kopernik University in Toruń. This was the beginning o f a systematic research into the techniques of the production and conservation of assorted types of paper and fabric works of art from the Far East. The purpose o f the research was to recreate the original Far Eastern conservation techniques and to apply contemporary European methods. The knowledge and experiences provided by theoretical studies and ensuing conservation work made it possible to expand the range o f the theoretical and practical training o f students, specializing in the conservation of paper and leather. First diploma dissertations dealing with these issues have been already presented. Conservation problems connected with the protection o f Far Eastern art have been discussed upon the example of vertical scrolls — kakemono. The article describes this form of painting and its mounting and characterises typical damage. The basic part o f the study comprises a presentation o f the conservation o f a series of Chinese paintings depicting court scenes: the technique o f the execution of the paintings, the state of their preservation, as well as their conservation. Finally, the author outlines fundamental, but little known ways o f preservation and storage. She demonstrates i.a. the proper way of displaying the scrolls and the forms, binding for all conservators, o f protecting the scrolls against changeable conditions created by temperature and humidity.
