The aim of special education today is to socially include people affected by a disorder. One of the ways to enhance the effectiveness of therapy is to work with animals, including dogs. The domestic dog has become an important part of many families and has proven to help discharge emotions. Interactions between a person with disability and a dog can favorably influence emotional and cognitive processes and contribute to better social adjustment. This article takes a critical stance on research on the effectiveness of dog therapy, noting that it does not meet the standards of evidence-based medicine. Interactions between dogs and humans may, however, have therapeutic significance, as evidenced and reported by analysis of many patients’ case studies.
