The author analyses the liberal thoughts of the five most important intellectuals connected with the magazine „BESZÉLŐ”. They began as part of the opposition, against communism, and continued this line of work through the '90s. The following article presents how liberal concepts evolved after the breakdown of the communist regime, as well as the differences in ideas and approaches regarding communism. By then, liberal ideas were possible to introduce into a democratic system and were even confronted with expectations posed by the population. As a concluding remark the author points out that developed liberal thought in Hungary can be described as a liberal democracy.
