The article challenges the standard interpretation of the term prostaxis which we find in connection with partial disfranchisement (atimia) in the speech On the Mysteries by the Attic orator Andocides. According to the standard interpretation, prostaxis was a technical term for partial limitation of citizen rights in classical Athens. Developing critical remarks and ideas expressed by some previous scholars, the article argues that in using this word Andocides is referring exclusively to specific prohibitions imposed by special decrees. The occurrence of the term prostaxis in the decree of Patrocleides that is inserted in Andocides’ speech is irrelevant, since the whole document is a forgery.
