Tattooing of the incarcerated is an unwritten custom in Polish prisons. Yet it has its historical background. For ages the practice of “body painting” of criminals had been used. Nowadays, however, a tattoo in the prison has got a completely different use. It has got many functions and multiple meanings. It should be noticed that tattoos have a broad meaning. They usually refer to: subculture (prison slang), humour, eroticism, love (sentimental), warnings, information, history (discography), ideology, religion, crime, brand (company), increasing self-esteem, martyrdom, emotions, sentences (catch phrases). By means of the contents mentioned above the tattoo can be and often is a perfect way of a non-verbal communication between inmates. In this case the drawing for those unfamiliar is only an incompatible set of random marks, such as dots and lines, but for those familiar with the subject it is a clear signal or information about the bearer.
