In diesem Artikel geben wir einen Überblick über unsere Forschungsarbeiten im Zusammenhang mit der Thematik der Diskursrelationen im Sprach- und Registervergleich und dem korpuslinguistischen Forschungsprojekt „German-English contrasts in cohesion – Towards an empirically-based comparison (GECCo)“. Die Arbeiten sollen zu einer Analyse und Erklärung von Textkohäsion im Englischen und Deutschen beitragen. Beispiele für sprachvergleichende korpusbasierte Ansätze zu Fragen der englischen und deutschen Textkohäsion sind bislang selten und behandeln hauptsächlich einzelne Kohäsionsmittel, aber nicht Textualität und Diskursorganisation in einem größeren Zusammenhang. In diesem Artikel wird speziell auf die korpusbasierte Untersuchung von endophorischen Ellipsen als beispielhaft gewählte Fallstudie im Kontext des GECCo-Projektes eingegangen, wobei im Projekt die gesamte Bandbreite von Kohäsionsmitteln abgedeckt wird. Es wird gezeigt, wie sich die Subtypen von Ellipsen in englischen und deutschen Subkorpora der geschriebenen und gesprochenen Sprache verteilen und was die Präferenzen einzelner Register und Textsorten beider Sprachen in Bezug auf die Ellipsenarten sind.

This article provides an overview on our current research with regard to language- and register-related discourse relations and gives an outline of the corpus linguistic project “German-English contrasts in cohesion—Towards an empirically-based comparison (GECCo)“. With the design of the GECCo corpus, we intend to provide a resource allowing an intensive contrastive investigation of cohesion in English and German. Contrastive research on English and German with an empirical methodological orientation is rare and has usually only covered individual cohesive devices, but not textuality and discourse organization in a wide-ranging context. This article has a special focus on the corpus-based analysis of endophoric ellipses as a case study in the context of the GECCo project in which all cohesive devices are discussed and described. It shows some differences in the frequency distribution of ellipsis subtypes between English and German subcorpora for written and spoken data and how registers and text types in both languages differ in their preference for particular ellipsis types.
