Tourism in the Dutch East Indies in the 19th and 20th centuries had various aspects. This article discusses the use of various elements both of the Dutch and the Dutch East Indies’ identity in the promotion of tourism in the Dutch East Indies. What did the Dutch identity look like and which elements were used in tourism’s promotion of the Dutch East Indies? Using the concept of cultural identity from Stuart Hall (1994) and Ludo Beheydt (2002), we trace the characteristics both of the Dutch and the Dutch East Indies’ identity in the various elements of the promotion of Dutch East Indies’ tourism.
