The article looks at the goals of EU innovation policy, codified in the Lisbon Strategy, in terms of their compatibility with the challenges posed by members with less-developed economies, particularly Poland. The author posits that realising these goals may be conducive to improving the innovativeness of the Polish economy on the condition that formulating particular solutions on their basis will to a greater extent than ever before take into consideration the issue of the transfer of technology. The article describes mechanisms for diffusing innovation and their potential effect on economic growth. The premises for why the diffusion of innovation may be considered an effective method for modernising the Polish economy are elaborated. The article then examines Poland’s accomplishments to this point in bridging the technological gap against Polish programme documents constituting the operationalisation of the Lisbon Strategy. The aim of the examination is to assess whether the propositions contained in the documents for measures to be taken will meet the technological challenges posed by the Polish economy.
