The paper discusses the problems associated with preparing young people for the military service in Poland between the 15th and 17th century. The views of contemporary intellectuals are presented together with their ideas of developing military education. The teaching of young people how to fight and defend their homeland was always significant for the safety of the country. The study was conducted to determine the elements which were crucial for creating the schools able to prepare children for military service. The paper is also the beginning of an analysis of the function and possibilities of military schools in the 21st century.
