Tadeusz Krauze was born in Warsaw to Alfons and Kazimiera Krauze – a typical couple of the pre-war stratum of “intelligentsia.” After World War Two, the Krauze family relocated to Łódź – the closest city to the completely ruined Warsaw. There Tadeusz attended a renowned high-school and wnet on to study mathematics at the University of Łódź. After obtaining his Master’s degree, he moved to Warsaw, where for a few years he worked in the Institute of Mathematical Machines (i.e. computers). In 1958, following an invitation arranged by professor Clyde Hamilton Coombs from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Tad Krauze went there to specialize in mathematical psychology. He later studied at the University of Columbia in New York and then the New York University, where in 1973 he earned a Ph.D. in sociology. He was professor of sociology at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, for more than forty years. He also used to visit his native Poland, where he took an active role in Polish scientific life. Krauze’s first interest in sociology in the U.S. was in the sociology of science, which he studied with specialists from Cornell University. However, he later moved on to social stratification and had a lasting interest in the mathematical modeling of social phenomena. As a participant in the Fulbright Program he acted as visiting professor at the University of Maria Curie-Skłodowska in Lublin (Poland). This was the year when the martial law was established by the Communist authorities in Poland, which gave Krauze’s interests in social stratification and social problems an unexpected local enhancement. He published in leading sociology journals, including American Sociological Review and Social Forces. He co-edited two volumes on social inequality in Poland, republished last year by Routledge. For many years Tad Krauze was the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Sociology. When he finally left this position, the editorial board named him Editor Emeritus. He also shared his editorial experience while on the Editorial Board of Ask: Research and Methods. Tad Krauze was the author, or co-author, of many papers in the sociology of science, sociology of social stratification and mobility, and public opinion research. While visiting Poland he always focused on mathematics. He was a permanent member of the Szkoła Matematyki Poglądowej (School of Educational Mathematics) co-organized by the University of Warsaw, and a member of the Polish Mathematical Society and Polish Sociological Association.
