The article presents a short analysis of a small segment of the complex and manifold relations between art and politics. As the reference point a statement by Jacques Rancière was used, in which he noted that art is a form of political engagement which, by facilitating re-distribution of items, images and words, leads to re-configuration of public space and to establishment of new forms of experience. Public space is then a territory of artistic practice and as such it is subject to transformation not only when art collaborates with power in a servile role, but also when art demonstrates a different interpretation of reality, and when it introduces new forms and meanings to such reality. This is particularly visible in contemporary Poland in the domain of competition for interpretation and re-interpretation of the national sphere, including its presence in public space. In the second part of the article, by referring to the category of national sensorium, we present examples of reconfiguration of the national public space, made at the level of both artistic exhibitions and everyday displays of national symbols, for instance by wearing patriotic clothing.
