As the publisher of “Ochrona Zabytków”, the National Institute of Cultural Heritage would like to invite you and your subordinates from Voivodeship Heritage Protection Offices to engage in more extensive collaboration in the creation of the periodical and its contents. “Ochrona Zabytków” is an academic journal of specialist and interdisciplinary nature, with particular focus on the field of art and cultural studies, which is dedicated to the issue of protection of cultural goods in the broadest sense. The journal refers to the concept of the pre-war publication titled “Ochrona Zabytków Sztuki” and has been released in its present form since 1948 without interruption. It is the mission of “Ochrona Zabytków” to enable the presentation and exchange of views on heritage protection activities and doctrines – both contemporary and historical. Our journal has always featured both the issues which are important for the Polish heritage protection community and representatives of the heritage protection services. We are hoping to rekindle the cooperation and see them featured here much more frequently! The activities of Heritage Protection Offices reflect the complexity of dealing with monuments. Conservation assumptions, doctrinal references, decisions regarding the scope and methods of interference, the issues of legal protection, documentation and management of assets all have their place in day-to-day office practice. They constitute the perfect material for reflection on the doctrinal and legal – but also systemic and social – circumstances which shape the theory and practice of monument protection. They also constitute the knowledge and experience which should be preserved and presented in the form of academic reflection or documentary account. For this reason, the Editorial Team of “Ochrona Zabytków” would like to ask you, the Voivodeship Heritage Protection Officers, to make the effort personally or by engaging your current and past subordinates, to report on the achievements, decisions and activities which shape the protection of cultural goods in Poland on a daily basis on the pages of our journal. We are looking for review articles, but also for discussions of works, research, discoveries or the once popular and now rarely published lists of conservation works. We are interested in the stories of the most valuable goods, but also those goods which are regional, peripheral, local yet play a major role in the shaping of the Polish cultural landscape, the regional cultural identity of “little homelands”. Experience tells us that these materials have extraordinary value as sources, and at the same time bear testimony to the state of the discipline in a given period. These texts usually stand the test of time and become sources for research into the history of Polish heritage protection activity. Please send your article suggestions to redakcjaoz@nid.pl. Information for the authors can be found at: https://ochronazabytkow.nid.pl/panele/for-authors/. The texts sent to the Editorial Team are reviewed and subject to procedures appropriate for academic publications. The Editorial Team reserves the right to decide whether it will publish the suggested material. Do not hesitate to contact us and ask questions if you should have any doubts regarding the planned texts. Please send your questions to the Editor-in-Chief to the following email address: asiwek@nid.pl. We are hoping for a broad response and your active cooperation! For involvement in the documentation of the activity in the scope of protection of cultural goods in a broad sense as well as commentary thereon. We encourage you to act in line with the words used by the Editorial Team of 1931 to open “Ochrona Zabytków Sztuki”, the predecessor of our journal: “The source and origin of our journal was, therefore, our duty towards the study of art from the past and towards society, which has entrusted its great treasure – art monuments – in the care of conservators. . . . Establishment of our own body became . . . an act which can highlight the results of work in the scope of reconstruction, restoration and conservation of art monuments. When assuming the responsible functions of protecting the monuments, Polish conservators knew that the public must be made aware of their responsibility. Without this public awareness, the greatest efforts of the conservation community as a professional and official organisation would be in vain. We cannot allow the activity of a dozen or several dozen individuals, who may possess an extensive mandate and authority, to be met with passivity of the general public”. Although nearly one hundred years (minus nine) have passed since then, the words remain relevant and we hope that they will encourage the Heritage Protection Services to participate in active shaping of the contents of the “Ochrona Zabytków” of today. Hoping for your collaboration Management of the National Institute of Cultural Heritage and Editorial Team of “Ochrona Zabytków”
