Egzystencjalne, trwające od najwcześniejszego dzieciństwa do śmierci, zainteresowanie muzyką artykułował Tomasz Mann w aspekcie stosunku pomiędzy niemiecką muzyką, niemiecką tożsamością i niemiecką historią. Współzależności te składały się według niego na niemiecką mentalność. Wczesną twórczość Tomasza Manna charakteryzuje fascynacja muzyką Ryszarda Wagnera, zarówno od strony warsztatowej (stosowanie motywów przewodnich), jak i tematycznej. Artykuł omawia bliżej te zagadnienia na przykładzie noweli „Waelsungenblut”.

Thomas Mann’s existential interest with music, which started in his early childhood and lasted till his death, found expression in the presentation of the relationship between German music, German identity and German history. These interdependencies built, according to Mann, the German mentality. The early works of Mann are infused with the fascination with Richard Wagner’s music with respect to both the form (the use of leitmotifs) and to the content. The paper discusses these aspects in detail on the example of the novella “Waelsungenblut”.
