The author presents general principles of employing dendrochronology in the protection of monuments. A dendrochronological technique makes it possible to date historic wooden structures such as excavated objects, monuments of architecture and works of art exact to one year. The Academy of Fine Arts in Wa rsaw and the Institute for W o o d Biology at Hamburg University have undertaken studies on a comparative chronology for the north of Poland. First results obtained during the studies on a rchaeological wood from the O ld Town at Elblqg have been presented in this article.
