IATE représente la plus vaste base de données terminologiques multilingue au monde. Elle contient plus de 8 millions de termes, disposés autour d’une constellation d’environ 1,5 millions de notions et utilisés, jour et nuit, par des traducteurs dans le monde entier. IATE est à la fois consultée et alimentée par les traducteurs et les terminologues des institutions européennes, pour lesquels la base est une étape obligatoire de leur travail quotidien. La multitude de ces termes est certainement impressionnante, eu égard notamment à la qualité des données en jeu. Elle induit aussi un immense effort et des défis de taille relativement au besoin d’enregistrer, d'actualiser, de nettoyer et de (ré)inventer une telle quantité de données, qui couvrent pratiquement tous les domaines de la connaissance en Europe. Dans cet article, nous vous présentons quelques-uns de ces défis, que la plupart des terminologues sauront reconnaître immédiatement, mais qui sont exacerbés par la quantité et la complexité de ces informations terminologiques et du système technique qui les contient – données historiques, doublons, néologismes, nouveaux concepts, contraintes techniques et administratives, entre autres. Nous vous proposons d’aborder quelques exemples, en français et en polonais, mais aussi en anglais et en roumain, afin de comprendre les défis avec lesquels nous nous colletons quotidiennement afin de fournir des traductions de qualité, économes en moyens, intelligentes et intelligibles pour les plus de 510 millions de citoyens européens.

IATE jest największą wielojęzyczną bazą danych na świecie. Zawiera 8 milionów terminów, zgrupowanych wokół 1,5 miliona pojęć; dniem i nocą korzystają z niej miliony użytkowników na całym świecie, a dla tłumaczy i terminologów pracujących w instytucjach europejskich stanowi ona nieodzowne narzędzie pracy i inspirujące źródło rozważań. Liczby te robią wrażenie, tym bardziej że wiele haseł cechuje się wysoką jakością; istnieje jednak druga strona medalu: konieczność wyszukiwania/opracowywania, zapisywania, aktualizacji i doskonalenia tak wielkiej ilości informacji – obejmujących w zasadzie wszystkie dziedziny wiedzy europejskiej – nieodłącznie wiąże się z olbrzymimi wyzwaniami. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono niektóre z tych problemów, które są świetnie znane praktykującym terminologom, tu jednak występują w znacznym nasileniu, ze względu na ogrom i stopień złożoności danych terminologicznych i systemu technologicznego służącego do ich rejestrowania. Do problemów tych należą: dane przejęte ze starszych baz, duplikaty, neologizmy, nowe pojęcia, ograniczenia techniczne i administracyjne itd. Podane przykłady – w językach francuskim i polskim, a często także angielskim i rumuńskim – mają za zadanie dać pogląd o codziennych, stale pojawiających się wyzwaniach, które wynikają z potrzeby zapewnienia rzetelnych, niedrogich, dobrze przemyślanych i zrozumiałych tłumaczeń przeznaczonych dla ponad 510 milionów obywateli europejskich.

IATE is the largest multilingual terminology database in the world. Its more than 8 million terms, arrayed around 1.3 million concepts, are used, day and night, by translators all over the world, and represent daily ‘food’ and ‘food for thought’ for the translators and terminologists working for the European Institutions. These numbers are truly impressive, especially as many of the entries are of good quality, but part of the same truth is that the need to record, update, prune and (re)invent such a huge amount of information, covering basically all the domains of European knowledge, is inevitably accompanied by many daunting challenges. In this paper, we are going to present you some of these issues, which many terminology practitioners will be able to recognize at a glance, though magnified manifold due to the sheer size and depth of terminological data and of the technical system containing them—legacy information, duplication, neologisms, new concepts, technical and administrative constraints, and so many more. The examples given—in French and Polish, but also often in English and Romanian—, are intended to give a glimpse of the daily, year-round challenges which are brought about by the need to provide quality, cost-effective, intelligent and intelligible translations for the more than 510 million European citizens.
