W opinii Giannalberta Bendazziego, sformułowanej w wydanej niedawno fundamentalnej trzytomowej pracy „Animation. A World History” (2016), Nowy Jork to główne centrum rozwoju amerykańskiej animacji niezależnej. Potwierdza to również trudno dostępna, wydana przed laty z inicjatywy Billa Plymptona, Signe Baumane i Patricka Smitha, dwupłytowa edycja DVD zatytułowana „Avoid Eye Contact. Best of NYC Independent Animation” (2003, 2005). Autor tekstu rekonstruuje listę artystów należących do nowojorskiego środowiska, kreśląc przy tej okazji sylwetki dwojga najbardziej znanych na świecie jego reprezentantów. Służą temu rozmowy przeprowadzone z Billem Plymptonem i Signe Baumane w Krakowie podczas udziału animatorów w dwóch edycjach Międzynarodowego Festiwalu Filmowego Etiuda&Anima, które odbyły się w latach 2007 i 2015.

According to the opinion of Giannalberto Bendazzi, expressed in the recently published three volume work “Animation. A World History” (2016), New York is a major centre for the development of American independent animation. This is also confirmed by a double DVD released thanks to the initiative of Bill Plympton, Signe Baumane and Patrick Smith entitled “Avoid Eye Contact. Best of NYC Independent Animation” (2003, 2005). The author of the article reconstructs the list of artists belonging to the New York community and uses the occasion to bring us closer to the two most important representatives of the movement – Bill Plympton and Signe Baumane, whom he interviewed in Krakow, during the International Film Festival Etiuda&Anima that took place in 2007 and 2015.
