(Capitulary on the Royal Estates), one of best-known edicts of the Charlemagne empire, was developed in the emperor’s chancellery around the year 800. The capitulary provides rare and valuable insights into the world of Medieval botany. For Charlemagne, it was merely a collection of unifying directives which enabled him to control agents administering royal domains. For the contemporary reader and scientist, it is an invaluable venture point for a discussion about the history of plants and their place in a world controlled by humans. It raises questions about the origin, cultivation and practical applications of various species. Unfortunately, the catalogue in Capitulare de villis uses common Frankish names of plants which were grown in Charlemagne’s latifundia. A further analysis of the cited species requires a detailed Capitulare de villis examination of classical and Medieval sources.
