The role of today’s school is to educate students to be able to participate in the society in the future, especially to face the rapid social changes. Science education significantly affects the relationship with nature as well as their attitude to their own health. Primary science education in Slovakia has been since 1976 provided by a single subject – SCIENCE- which tries as the first of many science subjects show a child a complex picture of the world based on the explanation of natural laws. Science, as an integrated science subject, provides much interesting knowledge, but its preparation for younger school age has its own characteristics. In primary science teacher not only helps create new concepts, but more often helps correcting already established concepts. The author will present the history of the subject and its syllabus, introduce the concept of the subject and draw attention to its specifics. Watching the development of science textbooks from the first in 1976 to the present ones will also be of much interest.
