The article is an attempt at defining major measures aimed at reaching sustainable development. In order to obtain the necessary data the author conducted a survey of solutions applied in the European countries. The analysis covered objectives incorporated in the strategies for sustainable development (or equivalent documents) as well as the sets of indicators used for monitoring sustainable development in individual member countries. The set of indicators put forward by the European Commission was used to split sustainable development into 14 basic areas of activities.
