The 2002 census showed that the number of Muslims who were Russian citizens stood at 14.5 million, with the figure up to 15 million in 2015, although unofficial estimates are as high as 20 million. Muslims constitute a majority in seven Russian regions, including Ingushetia (98%), Chechnya (96%) and Dagestan (94%). Traditionally associated with Northern Caucasus and the Volga region, today Islam is spreading to the Urals and Siberia, even penetrating the Far East. Resulting from increased Muslim immigration and internal migration from the North Caucasus, this fact significantly affects the overall situation in Russia.
