Najnowsze badania nad tekstem inskrypcji o Balaamie pochodzącej z Tell Deir ‘Alla w Jordanii (identyfikacja języka, rekonstrukcja tekstu, czas powstania, kontekst historyczny) w zestawieniu z analizą diachroniczną tej tradycji w Biblii Hebrajskiej pozwalają sądzić, że jej źródeł szukać należy w izraelskim środowisku z Transjordanii z przełomu IX/VIII w. przed Chr. Balaam wydaje się ucieleśniać początki tradycji prorockich w Izraelu związane z kontaktem z ludami pochodzącymi z Asyrii i praktykami wywodzącymi się tego kręgu kulturowego. Najstarsza biblijna wersja z Lb 22-24* stanowi wyraźną, monoteistyczną relekturę tradycji o Balaamie. Widzący prezentowany jest tu jako obcy wróżbita i „prorok” podległy woli Jhwh. Zaznacza się też jego przejście od działań indukcyjno-magicznych (szukanie Boga, próba przekleństwa Izraela) do intuicyjnych zdolności prorokowania (Duch Boży, błogosławieństwo Izraela). W końcu przedstawia się tu także (epizod z oślicą) jego karykaturę, wątpiąc zarówno w jego dobre intencje, jak i same zdolności „widzenia”. W kolejnych reinterpretacjach (kapłańska, deuteronomistyczna i późniejsze) ocena samego Balaama jest już (poza Mi 6,5) wyraźnie negatywna.

The recent studies on the text of inscription about Balaam coming from Tell Deir ‘Alla in Jordan (identification of language, reconstruction of text, time of creation, historical context) compared to the diachronic analysis of this tradition in the Hebrew Bible suggest that its sources should be sought in the Israeli environment in TransJordan at the turn of the 9th-8th centuries B.C. Balaam seems to embody the beginnings of prophetic traditions in Israel associated with the contact with the people from Assyria and the practices being derived from this cultural area. The earliest Biblical version from the Book of Numbers 22-24* is a clear monotheistic rereading of the tradition about Balaam. The Seer is presented here as a foreign diviner and a „prophet” being subordinate to the will of Jhwh. His transition from inductive and magic activities (search for God, attempt to curse Israel) to intuitive prophesying abilities (Spirit of God, blessing of Israel) is also noted. Finally, his caricature is also presented here (sheass episode), doubting both in his good intentions and his very abilities to „see”. In next interpretations (Levitical, Deuteronomic and later), the evaluation of Balaam himself is clearly negative (except the Book of Micah 6:5).
