Upon the basis of experiences and observations from the region of Cracow, where numerous valuable architectural monuments are subject to the impact of a strongly polluted environment, the author discusses possibilities of retaining architectonic detail in those conditions. The most suitable solution is, of course, the elimination of pollution, or, more precisely, the elimination or reduction of the concentration of compounds which constitute the prime corrosion factor. Since undertaking in this domain exceed the possibilities at the olisposal o f the conservationist, the autor draws attention to the fact that the mechanism o f the destruction o f monuments are reflected by a product whose result depends upon many factors. The fundamental arresting o f the damages can be attained by influencing the remaining factors or even only one of them, by means of: - themselves do not constitute a corrosive factor but which act as catalysts, such as hydrogen oxide from automobile exhaust fumes (the elimination or limitation of traffic in the v ic inity of historical monuments); - th e elimination of dampness w hich affects the corrosion process - screens and lean-to's, proper draining of rain water, isolation, water-resistance; - the removal or neutralization of soluble salts; - the liquidation of microorganisms (bacteria, moulds, fungi and lichen) w hich develop in a polluted environment and stimulate corrosion; - protective coatings; the author discusses zinc oxide, siliconorganic compounds and perfluorpolyethers; - th e resistance of material which it is possible to increase by introducing a new more resilient binding material (this pertains mainly to limestone, mortar and plaster). In conditions of considerable ecological threat, the author regards it as justified to depart from the principle of reconstructions and replenishment in !dentical material in favour of the application of akin material (similar colour, and texture) but one of higher resistance. Elements to be replaced and completed should be executed when it is still possible to decipher the original form. The author also considers protection by means of dismantling and transference of elements of the original, outer architectonic decoration to interiors justified only in cases of details of outstanding value (for example, sculpture) or model elements.
