The notion of a body (shenti) which is deeply embedded in Chinese culture is a point of departure for an analysis of the female body in the 20th and 21st century. The Chinese female authors and artists present a model of identity in which it appears as a means of self-articulation. The selection of works, that can only be partly comprehensive both vertically in terms of chronology and horizontally in terms of cultural breadth, is aimed at showing an enhanced awareness of themselves as women and of their bodies in both public and private spaces. The image of women that emerges from there are women that consciously claim the territory of body and authorship.
