Civilizational changes, especially mediatization, influence proper names, and as a consequence, a change in research methodology is needed. In this article, artiphonyms are described, that is, names of groups engaged in artistic activity, for example, cabaret names. The point of departure for analysis is treatment of the artiphonym as an announcement that has a sender, a real recipient, and a virtual recipient. To demonstrate how interpretations of names vary depending on the perspective taken, a motivational classification from the sender’s point of view is proposed. Differentiated here are deliberate names (connected with persons: founders, members of the cabaret, their earlier activity; with activity: with quality, form, type of humor presented, themes, inspirations; with the circumstances of the cabaret’s creation; with the predilections of the entertainers or persons closely connected to them) as well as random names. This is not a separate classification, because one name may have many motivations, and the same name may appear in many forms. Conclusions from the classification show two tendencies: toward awkwardness in name choice and toward growing awareness of the advertising function of a name (by including the perspective of the virtual recipient and modifications in the names). The proposed classification may be a point of departure for the description of proper names’ function proposed by M. Rutkowski.
